Fun in the Sun

Wasn't sure else to title this entry and since all the snow has melted (AGAIN!!!!) it seemed to fit. Well it could have been "I Hate USPS" but that seemed a bit too negative. Allow me to explain. I have a rather large eBay order coming in, or rather that was supposed to come in about 2 and a half weeks ago. Actually in point of fact it DID come in but the local branch of the USPS not only didn't attempt to deliver it (I know that because I've been around when they would have supposedly been here with it), but they didn't leave a notice that I had a package. Result: it was sent back to the seller and now we get to try and do this all over again.

What else is there to say? Oh yeah. HAPPY NEW YEAR! I didn't do much to ring in the new year myself. Considering this is the first year since 8th grade that I haven't been performing in 1st Night in St.J I wouldn't have known what to do with myself anyways. Laura and I just sort of hung out... it was nice enough but maybe next year we'll think of something to actually do. The night after that Laura, myself and her roommates played board games. We played a bit of 90s Trivial Pursuits (nice to realize how little I know about the decade I grew up in). Actually before that we played Clue which I ended up winning (not through any great powers of deduction but mainly because two other plays made accusations and got it wrong before me). Then we played Scene It which is a movie trivia game which comes with a DVD and video questions and all that. Pretty cool, plus Laura and I completely dominated the first time we played that.

Well I'm off to run a few errands and then meet up with Laura for dinner.

Belated Christmas Update

Well it was an interesting Christmas, I basically had two of them. First was going to see Laura's family in New Hampshire. They have an interesting way of doing presents, on Christmas Eve the family exchanges gift and on Christmas day is when you get gifts from Santa. The family was very welcoming though everybody was a little tense for various reasons (mainly the passing of Kevin's, that's Laura's father, mother) but I think having the little kids around helped keep everybody in the Christmas spirit. Even if they did need to be coralled every now and then. It was the first time I'd had a Christmas with kids much younger than me and it was an interesting, and exhausting experience.

From there we headed up to St.J where we had Christmas at my grandmothers the way I remember it (first stockings, then I hand out the gifts then we open youngest to oldest, which meant Laura got to go first). All the old favorites were there, the various fruits and goodies in the stocking, my grandmother's popcorn balls, just as I remember it always is. It's nice to have be able to go home from time to time and have some things never change.

The trip back from Vermont was a bit of a grueling experience. We can thank the mass of snow that go dumped for that. First a bus with connections on the one that we were taking was delayed so they made us wait. Now I can understand doing that if the bus that's late is 10, 15, hell even 30 minutes late. But when it's over and hour and a half behind and the bus we're taking is sitting right there you work something out so that you don't make EVERYBODY on the fucking planet late!!!! This obviously has tapped into my deep loathing of all things Greyhound. Anyways by the time we got it the T had stopped running so we had to wait for a cab. The one we got into was first of all overloaded (like illegally, people sitting on top of each other and everything) and before we made it to Laura's we got to have two 360 degree spins in the middle of Broadway (thank god nobody else was on the road or it would have been a 4 car pile up easily). And then the guy had the nerve to say I was underpaying him. Yeesh.

Anyways we're back and safe and had a pretty good Christmas. The usual haul of movies, clothes and gift cards. Laura's brother got me a 3 month subscription to Netflix which means I'll be renting all the movies I missed but don't feel confident enough to buy (the first batch of "Collateral", "Dawn of the Dead", and "Chronicles of Riddick" came in today). Should be fun. I'm gonna get Laura to show me how to do a page cut or whatever they are and then expect a multitude of reviews.

(no subject)

I know I should really do an actual update but in the meantime I swiped this from happyspector

1. Reply to this post, because I would like to say a couple words about you.
2. I will also tell you what song(s) remind me of you when I hear it.
3. I will also tell you what celebrity/public person you remind me of, either personality-wise or looks-wise.
4. I will also give ONE WORD that I associate with you when I think of you.
5. We all could use a boost now and then, so steal this for your journal and make someone else's day as well.

Feeling Like a Kid

Well this update is a little delayed from when I had planned to write it but what the heck, better late than never. This past weekend (or specifically Sunday) with Laura was a great sort of "let's just do silly kid stuff" time. I was already in that mode thanks to many hours of Kingdom Hearts (which I beat earlier today... now I just need to finish all the bonus stuff) on the PS2. Basically we went and bought crayons, coloring books, and break and bake cookies. We made cookies, colored Muppet Babies and Garfield and drank strawberry margaritas (ok so not a total kids weekend). Rounded it off with a game of Monopoly. I don't think I've played the board game version for probably a decade (it was surplanted by video game versions because they're easier to clean up when you're done). Laura had a monster of a come back thanks to my ability to regularly hit her houses (and later hotels) on Boardwalk pretty much ever other go around the board. Seriously I had almost all the money in the game at one point and a few hours later I was finished. Oh well, fun was had by all and we finished it off by watching "The Nightmare Before Christmas" which I hadn't seen since it was out in the theaters 11 years ago. Ah... memories.

'Tis the Season

Well considering at this point we're well into the holiday season it's time I ranted. Or it would be except this year the holidays aren't annoying me nearly as much as they usually do. This probably has a great deal to do with the fact that I'm no longer working in retail where the holiday season is rammed down your throat on a daily basis in the form of endless cheesy Christmas displays and being forced to endure horrific renditions of songs that weren't that good to begin with. Yes I have the potential to be quite the scrooge sometimes, I know this. Speaking of the songs it's probably also a help that since I no longer have a car I have no reason to listen the radio where you get bombarded with the same holiday crap they play every year and the worst and most painful advertisements ever devised.

But as I said I haven't really had to deal with that much this year. Mostly this year all I've had to put up with was the lights (which even I will concede are pretty), and the guys in front of stores ringing bells for donations. Some of those guys with the bells are the most depressed looking bastards I've ever seen. There was one guy in front of Star Market one night when Laura and I went in there who was sitting down, leaning against the wall and when passed him he very weakly rang the bell twice at us and then went back to slouching. Isn't this volunteer work? Why would you volunteer for something and then be that freaking depressed about it? For my money he had community service for a misdemeanor that he was finishing off.

Anyways Christmas shopping has gone rather well despite the fact that I ended up shopping for 5 or 6 more people than is normal for me. The music piped in at the retail stores seems a little quieter than normal, or maybe I'm just more focused on what I'm there for and am able to blot it out better then when I'm just browsing. That must be the case because that's when it really gets to me usually. When I'm just browsing a store for the heck of it, nothing related to Christmas shopping at all yet I still have to hear that damned music. Not so bad this time around.

I guess we'll see next year if this is the start of an upward trend or just a fluke.

Lonely Nights

Last night I slept alone for the first time in almost two weeks... can't say I cared for it. And there was more to it than the fact that I REALLY need to wash the sheets on my mattress. I was lonely. I woke up several times during the night (which I have a tendency to do from time to time) and I couldn't just roll over and give Laura a little nuzzle. Sure she usually just lays there and continues to sleep but it still counts for alot.

Before you get the idea that this is just a mope rant, allow me to clarify. This is "I'm so greatful for what I have" ramble. That fact that I could notice a difference after only one night alone really means something to me. But it's not some "Oh my god what am I going to do?!?" over the top obsession thing either. It's just a little nag, that something's missing. And it's comforting to know that that little nag is there, because it's not something I can control. It's a subconcious reaction that tells me that I really do need her in my life. I already knew that but little reminders that it's as real as it feels are always welcome.

Ok you can go vomit from the sentimentality of it all now if you want.

Great Weekend

I spent pretty much the entire weekend with Laura and it was wonderful. We went Christmas shopping together (I've basically only got Laura left to shop for and maybe a few assorted friends I'm trying to re-connect with) which took us everywhere from Newbury Comics, to the Fairy Shop, to a craft store, to Hubba-Hubba (Cambridge's fetish clothes store... THEY HAVE CHAIN MAIL!!!!). Other than that it has just sort of been the standard chilling out, napping, watching movies, chatting deal... except for last night.

Last night Laura and Cara went out for a girl's night out (which they have not had in some time). This gave Dan and I a chance to talk about Geeks and he finally burned episodes one through four onto a disc so I can look them over, tweak them, and get started in earnest on episode five. When the girls returned some hours later Laura was drunk and Cara was plenty buzzed. More booze was consumed by all (though I think Cara was the only one who got really trashed) and then things got... interesting. And I think it's best to just leave it at that. What a night.

Tomorrow I really need to get off my ass and do SOMETHING! Job-hunt, call an investment firm, a talent agency, write... just something. I've been sort of useless in the grand scheme of things over the past week and I how to rectify that.

Well I'm off to snuggle the night away (yeah I know, we're disgustingly cute... makes you want to puke).
